What is Ecommerce?

Ecommerce is also known as electronic commerce or internet commerce. It is defined as carrying out of business transactions over the internet. It is buying and selling of goods and services on the internet.

Ecommerce history dates back to August 11th, 1994, when a man by the name Phil Brandenberger in Philadelphia used his credit card to to buy a CD by band Sting for the first time on his computer.

Since then many people have taken advantage of ecommerce to carry out and grow their businesses on the internet.

Ecommerce is for anyone and everyone. This is thanks to different types of ecommerce models. There are four main different types of ecommerce models. This fact makes it possible for anyone to take the advantage of ecommerce to start and grow their businesses on the internet.

Main types of Ecommerce models

1. Business to Business (B2B)

This is the type of ecommerce model whereby a business sells a service or product to another business. If you plan to start a business that will be selling services or products to another business, then ecommerce is right for you. This type of model mainly involves selling of software to other businesses.

2. Business to Consumer (B2C)

This is the model where a business sells products or services to final consumers. You may start an ecommerce store that deals in t-shirts. Then your friend orders one from there. That’s a B2C type of ecommerce model.

3. Consumer to Business (C2B)

This model type of ecommerce is whereby a consumer like you sells his or her products or services to a business. An example is doing a shoutout to your followers about a product of a certain business for a fee. This model type proves that ecommerce is right even for a consumer to sell something. That’s not all, the more interesting one is hereunder.

4. Consumer to Consumer (C2C)

This is the one where consumers sell their products and services to fellow consumers. One may decide to list their own products on online marketplaces such as eBay for other consumers to purchase. A good example is listing your old bicycle on eBay for sale.
